When this first started happening, and OpenAI's release notes for 4 did cover trying to make it *not* discuss this, a weirdly large number of people responded ~"so what, they're only telling you things you can find with a google search".

AI is a very fast moving field. As I'm not a biologist or chemist, I have no idea if the practical impact of AI in those fields is like it has been with coding, going from simple things only (with lots of mistakes) to doing OK at most daily tasks. If it has passed the same threshold we got with Claude Code etc., I'm not surprised mainstream media is way behind the state of the art.
