This is years (decades?) old but I self hosted my email until everyone suddenly stopped accepting my mail. Has this phenomenon changed? Everyone on my domain was asking me what the hell happened why is my mail not being delivered and I had to do a panicked midnight migration to Google.

This hasn't changed, it git worse. Incoming spam was never the problem. Getting your mail delivered is. The article is not talking about that. If you only want to self host your mails and use an external smtp gateway for outgoing mail, then everything is fine
