I actually think it's a very relevant information that allow you to assess immediately the social class of an individual and know if you have similarities, people spend almost half their lifespan working, so it does matter a ton.

A person's career choice does tell you something about them, but it's far from the most important thing. I don't think it's valuable as a sole indicator of what sort of person they are or how well you'd get along with them.

As to social status: if someone is willing to befriend another when they have one sort of job but wouldn't be willing to befriend the same person if they had a different sort of job, I think that someone is cheating themselves.

No, it's not the most important thing (far from it, as you say). But it's a thing most people have, and a thing that most people are willing to talk about, and a thing that is socially acceptable to ask about, so it's a decent first question. It also has the virtue of not being too intense or intrusive.

Other first questions could be "What is the core of your identity?" (though that might be too intense/intrusive) or "Of all the things we could talk about, what would you be most interested in?"

I don't think I've ever asked someone what they do for a living as an icebreaker, personally. I've found there's always a more interesting thing to ask. I don't have a standard icebreaker, though, because the most interesting thing to ask depends on the person and situation. It could be something they're wearing, or something about an offhand comment you heard them say, or something about the situation/environment we are both in.

Work is what we do for income, not who we are as people. It’s just a job, if it’s someone’s identity, I recommend therapy to get ahead of the curve.

My condolences for the existential dread those folks face. Maybe it’s not so bad if AI replaces those jobs, if it helps those workers grow as humans and recognize that their labor was not who they were or are.

How important could your job be if it can be automated now, right? You as a human remain important, regardless of the work.
