Once again I will say my theory of how the internet became a few walled gardens: NOBODY WANTS TO HOST. Hosting sucks. It costs time and money. There are constantly new exploits to work around.

Yes, there are people who want their own host (The IndieWeb or Gemini communities are a clear example). The problem is that convenience is always the priority; there are no incentives.
I go through ebbs-and-flow of self hosting. Having an entire stack, with backups, even some HA when I'm feeling fancy.
