I find it interesting that it uses GTK, something quite unusual for a proprietary app. In any case, I am not using it, because I don't want to use a nonfree WWW browser.

Surprisingly, this is what the Webkit project uses for Linux, so that's why they chose it too.
That and Webkit on unix is almost entirely worked on by GNOME people
Webkit started as a fork of KDE's KHTML and KJS. It makes good sense.
AFAIK, KHTML used Qt, not GTK. :)
