While I would like to see us return to having federal senators elected by the state legislatures, I'm not going to give up citizen initiatives without a fight.

I certainly wouldn't. There are multiple states with legislatures having D/R party ratios in excess of 20 points different than both their registered party ratios and what their state-wide votes for things like governor and president end up being due to how badly gerrymandered they are.
America is already there. Our federal agencies are the primary interaction people have with the government, and are run by appointees by POTUS (likewise, state agencies by gubenatorial appointees).
