This story is so common, and while this post was a very eloquent write up, and it’d be easy to pile on “all those silly non-engineers”, it’s unhelpful for all involved. In keeping with the metaphor, how could Engineer, Mario, or Luigi have negotiated better trade offs? I mean, working for a baker as the founder or at least on the board is huge. But what else? Someone who’s had success critique my draft here:: I want to respect expertise without “caving”. “I understand the goal of the organization is 10% of the oven market, and I believe in that goal, but if we focus only on pizza for a while, we hit 6%, and gain at least 25% NPS. The garlic bread, calzone, and sweet pastry markets would be easy to tackle, getting us closer to cake. Alternatively, we start with cake. If we deliver Pepepizza a cake solution that absolutely thrills them, would that buy us credibility and time?” |
