I was laid off in Q3 24. I knew it was coming because I had already been forced to take two weeks off from burnout when my brain just lost the ability to reason about code any more, so realistically it was a blessing. I decided that I wasn't going to even think about programming for at least a year, simply to let my brain heal. It worked, I feel much better and started working on my own projects again, but now I feel like that gif from Community when Troy walks in with pizzas and the apartment is on fire. The state of the entire computing industry is strongly making me second guess if I want to continue in this career. My wife and I are in a good enough place financially that I don't need to work for a long while, but... I dunno. There has to be a pretty significant course correction before I'm willing to enter those trenches again. The sad thing is, this is the second time that my career of choice has evaporated out from under me (I was a projectionist in the 2000s). I don't know where I'm going to go from here. |
