If you run the same query 10 times, do you get roughly the same results or is there a lot of variance?

Yes, plenty of variance. That's why I'd recommend creating a range of different questions that you would like to appear for and check them regularly. Then you'll at least get some directionally-correct data, even if it isn't an exact science.
