It was something like that. I can't recall if my first was Yggdrasil or SLS/Slack but it was a stack of floppies in a folder.

Yggdrasil started off as an 18+ floppy distribution, but it was the first distro to allow booting a full rootfs from a CD .. and man, was that ever amazing back in 1994! Was worth the upgrades to turn my 486 into a functioning X server ..
