Frustrating the site doesn’t give any idea of what you’re supposed to be able to see with them on.

There are a few videos on the homepage https://www.specs.com/
on-foot navigation, web browsing, translation, and multi-player AR games like "EyeConnect," triggered when two wearers make eye contact

and they’re seemingly attempting an app ecosystem.

At this price, ain't two people going to make eye contact, ever.
First iPhone seemed useless and expensive.
No, it didn't. The first iphone looked incredible and expensive.

People complained it didn't have apps and didn't support java, but it was very cool.

Also, it cost $500.

$500 with new 2 year agreement.

The steep pricing initially hindered sales; Apple discontinued the 4GB model and dropped the 8GB model to $399 (from $599) just a few months later.

There were touchscreen feature phones before iPhone, the tech was proven and nothing special, they only popularized the idea.
That made the lack of features hurt more (the tech community being able to do them on Symbian phones, but not iPhone).
