Something to keep in mind is that teaching Pinyin in schools is at least partially an attempt by the Chinese government to drive non-Mandarin dialects of Chinese extinct. That's because Chinese characters are sred by all of the dialects of Chinese while Pinyin is based on the Mandarin pronunciation. |
