I remember this. They announced it on April 1st, which naturally led everyone to suspect it was an April Fools. The idea that they would offer one gigabyte of storage on a free email service, when competitors offered more like 25 MB, seemed impossible. However, Google had already made their April Fools joke for 2004 about a new operating system being developed for a moon base.

According to Wikipedia:
