Did anyone else expect one of the characters to immediately tragically die at some point in the story... or is it just me

Not until just before they enjoyed the traffic lights, where I thought his friend might just die of a heart attack any minute. I guess this tells us the message has been passed, that life is fragile and worthy of enjoyment.
