The recent hostilities are just one small part of it. Everyone shares some of the blame. And Iran has sponsored many attacks on Israel.

Iran sponsored the killing of thousands of Israelis (and attempts to kill many more), even if they never had the courage to carry out the attacks themselves.

Unfortunately the sanctions mostly affected the common people, so I think direct attacks on government leaders are preferable.
