I think the derogatory moniker comes from the fact that a lot of early American designs are very luck-based. The name stayed and I've seen fantastic games being called "Ameritrash". Personally, I don't like most Euro games. They are really well designed and balanced but the more "simulationistic" American designs resonate better with me.
Well, a lot of the early examples of this style aren't very good. ;-)
