The Nvidia NV1 mattered even if it was a misstep.

I'd say Voodoo 3 mattered because it killed 3dfx.

And the Matrox Parhelia mattered for much the same reason.

Voodoo 3 didnt kill 3dfx, it released month after TNT2 and offered better performance/price ratio. What killed 3dfx was Nvidias relentless release cycle with GF256 just 8 months later.
