And for the first few decades, human caused climate change was not even contested - then, when something started to be done about it, fossil fuel lobbies started channeling vast amounts of money to politicians and the media, and suddenly the issue became politicized and right-wing governments started rolling back regulations in the name of "competitiveness" (i.e. race to the bottom). So, in the next years, I'm afraid it could be considered a success if the rate of increase of carbon emissions actually continued slowing down instead of accelerating again...
