Working perfect on Archlinux i368 with XFCE. Way more responsive than in Windows for me.

no, I just extracted the .deb file and put its contents where they should be for the client to run.

   ar x steam.deb
   tar xf data.tar.gz
   cp -r usr/ /

Install from the AUR, the package is just called steam.
