This makes sense from Microsoft's point of view. Why would they pay a royalty fee on every copy of Windows when such a small percentage of users play DVDs? Especially when the fix is as easy as just downloading VLC.

I have to imagine Microsoft picturing the majority of Windows 8 machines (between tablets and laptops) not including a DVD drive.

Oddly, Windows 7 Pro does have DVD support out of the box.

Windows 7 does play DVDs out of the box. IIRC, so did Vista. I am surprised they went backward on this.

Licensing fees. Most copies of Windows never play a single DVD, so why let everyone pay?
