I always remember this excellent sci-fi story about exactly such things: https://slatestarcodex.com/2018/10/30/sort-by-controversial/ Strong emotions drive engagement. There are rather few of them; simple joy / laughter (think cat videos) is one that's relatively easy to evoke, but hate is equally easy to evoke, and it's much stronger. |
