It's actually worse than that: US government spending on healthcare per-capita actually exceeds per-capita government spending on healthcare in countries like Canada or the United Kingdom that have universal healthcare [1], let alone total spending per-capita across both the private & government sectors. Far from universal healthcare bringing an economy "to its knees", it seems to me that the US system has a far greater chance of doing so.
