A lot of mountaineering is contingent upon the decomposing chossy rock being solidified by ice. I can't speak to the Himalayas, but I can speak to southwest Colorado: climbing a 70 degree snow face is fun, climbing the pile of shit underneath it with crampons is (to me) terrifying. |
