I think the context and purpose of the article is more like this: Coursera + Kaggle performance is a legitimate a way to identify promising data scientists. As a hiring manager, I would be as interested in talking to these competitors as talking to a kid who just received his BS in computer science with a couple of machine learning/statistic classes under his belt.
