For sure. Typed holes are a fact of life. The wikipedia page on serialization formats[0] calls ASN.1 'information object system' style formalisms (which RFCs 5911 and 5912 make use of, and which Heimdal's ASN.1 makes productive use of) "references", which I think is a weird name.
