But I accept any kind of prior writing, in lieu of code. (I've interviewed for DBA, QA/Test, tech writing, etc. I believe, but cannot prove, that anyone who can write an essay can also code.) But The Correct Answer™ is some kind of (paid) probationary period, with no fault divorce. Long enough to validate skills, get past the "honeymoon" period, and verify team fit.
