Yes, but you are running the remote client on AIX ? AIX does not have Wayland at all nor its libraries. I had issues with that.

That is done a lot in many companies due to some proprietary applications.

what issues? if you do X11 forwarding then the remote client needs X11 only. there should not be any wayland dependency. that doesn't even make sense. more likely the issue is missing a specific X11 extension either in XWayland or on AIX.
They replaced AIX with RHEL a couple of years ago, so I cannot check anymore. When I tried w/wayland, nothing would display.
