How does lidar see around corners?

Waymo sensor pods are mounted at the corners of the vehicle allowing it to see things that a driver can't. (E.g. when pulling out of an alley)

That's not "seeing around corners", that's just sensor placement and can also be done with cameras. Tesla's side cameras on the front are in a similar location.
