Moderators sometimes demote submissions they deem shouldn’t be ranked that high. From https://drewdevault.com/2017/09/13/Analyzing-HN.html:

We downweight posts in response to things that go against the site guidelines, such as when a submission is unsubstantive, baity or sensational. This seems to have gotten a bit out of control. I’m not sure who the moderators are but they now appear to be acting against YC ethos
