It's not rare at all - multi-code point emojis are pretty standard these days. And before that the only thing the relative rarity did for you was that bugs with code working on UTF-8 bytes got fixed while bugs that assumed UTF-16 units or 32-bit code points represent a character were left to linger for much longer. |
