I wouldn't say they all quit, but they ultimately have to settle in less prestigious and less funded labs/universities. I've met countless great scientists in Italy which were ultimately wasted as professors and achieved little as scientists. I'm not saying that teaching isn't important, but it's a skill completely unrelated to being a good scientist, there's no overlap at all. |
