I would say that Tesla was successful in bringing EVs into the mainstream. As noted they don't seem able to compete (in the market they created without subsidies or tariffs).
The Wright brothers brought us flight. But then they did zero innovation, just squatting on patents and suing people. So, Elon will always have this first medal, but the rest - doubtful.
