Minimum wage jobs pay low wages because a large number of people can do them. This means that if you work a minimum wage job, you're not just competing with others in your field. You're competing with anyone willing to work for minimum wage.
It also works the other way around. If your job used to pay well but now only offers minimum wage, you could just as easily switch to any other minimum wage job.
