Whether you spend time following it all depends on your situation. Sure if your job involves implementing AI you should keep up but that's not most people.

Sure there'a a lot happening at the moment but I think I tried writing some not good AI stuff 45 years ago and followed it since and in some ways it's been quite slow moving. It can be good to be aware of the bigger picture.
