I think this is arguing semantics at this point but a charitable interpretation could be that one does not have control over the addiction and must therefore abstain from taking a particular substance, the abstinence being within the sphere of control of the individual. It's the difference between someone who can just drink a beer once in a while and an alcoholic that must abstain completly. |
