I guess we've outsourced that task to companies like Apple and Google. Your phone or tablet could be your thin client. You'd serve up the apps that you've bought directly from the developer, install and serve them from your own servers.

I don't think everyone wants this, techies and people interested in the topic definitely like the idea but the average person is much happier with a phone, laptop or table that they use to connect to the world and don't really need a whole damn server in the basement or wherever. What about apartments and things like that? Space is an issue.
