Looking at the history of that doc, I was most annoyed not about what was added but what was removed: the random anti-DEI stuff was in place of the part that described what an X server is.

Like, my guy. If your goal is to provide a better solution than the existing one, telling people what you're making is step 1. No, the user can't be assumed to already know. You've already made your first mistake if you've made that assumption.

I'm pretty sure that's not addressed to any potential "users", unless you're thinking that the future developers of the project are them.
The changes were in the README. That file is addressed to everyone who will have reason to touch the software: developers, users, future archivists trying to figure out what this directory is for.
