for the past 20 odd years, old hardware with tweaked, custom compiled and build FreeBSD, NetBSD served me and my few customers quiet well. There is lot of joy in it. Recently, I started modifying open source software to be self hostable. Some does not work well enough when the internet is not accessible. for example FarmOS.
