Contrary to the popular myth, Bitcoin is not fully decentralized. Those who write the code and convince others to run it have the absolute power. For example, they can enforce US sanctions by including the GeoIP database and making each node refuse transactions from IP addresses of the "wrong" countries, if they can convince others that this code is the code to run. Likewise, they have successfully enforced a number of protocol changes and hard forks in the past. |
