I don't think those are the same problem. "If only everyone would just do X" where X is a thing that has a positive benefit is unrealistic. "If only people would learn not to do Y" where Y is a thing which actively hurts them and which they can learn the negative consequences over time feels a whole lot less impossible to me. If your co-worker pulls this crap, tell them not to. Complain about it in performance reviews. Replace them with someone who writes good code. |

The last time I brought up concerns with a coworkers performance in a review I was fired a couple of weeks later
It turned out he was good buddies with my boss's boss
There are a lot of mechanisms in society preventing a lot of people from feeling the negative consequences of their poor work
