There's no better substitute to getting people with authority in whichever of your clients is most profitable a little tipsy and asking them about what they think the problems around them are, but it takes people skills and the opportunity to meet suitable persons. I really got good at it after I read the entirety of Ribbonfarm, but you gotta carefully consider if that kind of workload is right for you.
