I fail to believe outside of when we lived liked apes without any reading and writing this 'myth' was believed.

People had chickens and ate bird eggs, people would eat goose barnacles and not see baby geese, it'd be like all the other barnacles.

Maybe. People have a lot of faith in sources with authority. Especially if the reality of the situation has no effect on your life.

If you read that heavy objects fall faster then lighter ones from a source you trust you may very well just believe it. If your Dad tells you that heavy objects fall faster then lighter ones ... you also may very well believe it.

The real kicker to my mind is if it really matters to the way you life your life. Most people for most of these questions aren't going to notice or care much one way or the other.
