In another online community I'm part of I've watched members become mods, start to hate dealing with the messy parts of the community, get burnt out, then usually disappear. Sometimes they come back other times they don't. Or they appear in a flurry like the perseids before leaving again for a while. Most of the former mods are still in touch behind the scenes to help provide context and a sounding board when dealing with some of the personalities. It isn't the healthiest community without an influx of newcomers but it is still going and some of the people have known each other online for ~30 years.

I've generally appreciated mods in the places I hang out, but after getting a peak behind the curtain I understand why it can be a wearing role. And why rotating out of it can be a healthy plan.
