Reading alone probably not. Doing exercises yes. That is solving fake engineering problems - which become building blocks to real problems. It’s like teaching your kids fables which become instructive tor real life. And that’s the way most engineers started to learn.

I get it. Don’t spend years reading books and THEN start looking for work. But regular study with real pen to paper should be a part of your job search plan, especially if you care about quality of coworkers and employer. You might knock on enough doors and find someone desperate enough to say yes, but now you are occupied full time in that environment.

As you said, engineers are payed to know how to do things correctly
