Lots of people do burpees. The Crossfit crowd uses them extensively. It's been a part of conditioning at every Brazilian jiu jitsu school I've trained at - and for good reason, because they're hard.

"Working out" can mean many things. If you are already decently fit, and your goal is to build muscle, then burpees won't help. To build muscle, you need to lift weights. But if your goal is to improve endurance, then burpees are fantastic.

Also, of all of the movements and activities I do, burpess are on the very low end of liklihood to cause injury.
