Personally, I’ve been using Apple Maps for over 8 years without issue. I just checked the gulf, it’s of mexico and I am in the US.

Well they haven't. Neither has MapQuest, and weirdly Waze..

Give it time. If they still haven't renamed after a year, that's something. But even then, maybe just some lag.
