I think the article's author may have seen the cs.DS classification on the arxiv and assumed it meant Data Science instead of Data Structures
It's also possible that they don't actually know the difference, or was even asked to change it by an editor to make it sound more trendy. Skepticism of even good journalism is healthy. Gell-Mann amnesia and all.
Especially considering “data science” is nowhere near 40 years old.
Statistics are old.

Probably not. Most statistics is new, due to the explosion of interest since the advent of computers.
