My point is the idea that you can always “just ignore them” is pretty outdated advice from the early internet days. Sometimes it works, sometimes it just escalates disturbed people.

No matter how much tolerance you have for annoying behavior, some people will find a way to push beyond it. All it takes is, literally, one person with no sense of boundaries to make your life miserable once you’re on their radar.

In this particular case? I don’t know. Maybe something happened that would have crossed your threshold, maybe not. It's not that big a leap from sending threatening e-mails to harassing your friends and family to get your attention, or making phone calls. Whatever it was, clearly they reached their breaking point.

But no matter where your breaking point is, there are always people out there willing to cross it over things that seem utterly trivial.
