If people are seeing the only way to be a "standout contributor" being about putting in more than 40 hours a week, we may have found the disconnect. I don't work more than 40 hours a week, but when I slack off I just do the work put in front of me. Rather than hours, it's about energy. If companies want more than 40 hours a week, we can negotiate overtime. But I put extra energy in during the work week not because I think it makes me extra money or protects me from layoffs. I do it just because I think it is better. |
