If you turn on "show dead", there's an unusually large and alarming number of dead replies on this ranging from fairly banal flame baiting to outright bigotry and slurs. That alone probably shows the value in having these kinds of dedicated niche community sites.

Unfortunately I think it's more a function of forum size than topic. I say 'unfortunately' because there's a nasty feedback loop of site-being-good -> site-getting-bigger -> site-attracting-badness -> site-getting-worse.

Sometimes I describe this as "there's a cap on how good HN can ever get", but HN is just a placeholder there for any forum of comparable size.

If you search previous discussions on this site that in any way touch on lgbt/trans topic in the slightest, you will find it is not unusual at all. The only surprising thing about this post is that it somehow wasn't immediately flagged/removed from front page.
